Bruxism Treatment in Bilbao

Protect your teeth and relieve jaw tension

Teeth grinding and jaw clenching wear down your enamel and overload the joints. At Ibarreta Dental we design a custom-made occlusal splint and address the root causes so you sleep better and wake up without pain.

What is bruxism and why does it need treating?

Bruxism is the involuntary habit of grinding, clenching or sliding the teeth, most commonly during sleep (sleep bruxism) but also during the day (awake bruxism). It is caused by a combination of stress, sleep disorders and bite factors.

Without treatment, bruxism causes progressive wear of enamel, cracking or fracture of dental restorations or natural teeth, muscle pain in the jaw and face, temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ) problems and daily headaches affecting quality of life.

Frequently asked questions
about bruxism

The most common signs are: waking up with jaw pain or headache, worn or chipped teeth, sensitivity to cold or heat, ringing in ears or clicking in the jaw joint (TMJ). Your dentist can confirm the diagnosis with an oral examination.
The splint does not cure bruxism, but it is the most effective treatment for protecting your teeth and reducing muscle load. It acts as a shock absorber so the damage from clenching or grinding is not done to the tooth enamel.
Yes, it can be combined with other approaches: stress management techniques, physiotherapy for the masseter muscles, and in some cases botulinum toxin injections into the masseter muscles to reduce jaw clenching force.
